Sri Lanka’s Rugby Sevens 2026 season will burst into action today as the Inter-Club Rugby Sevens Series 2026 which kicks off its first leg at Longdon Place.
The two-day tournament, scheduled for today and tomorrow, will feature top club sides competing in a fast-paced format that promises excitement for rugby fans.
A total of nine men’s teams have been drawn into three competitive pools. After round 1 all group leaders plus the best group 2nd position team will move forward to the Cup semi-final. Winners will move to Cup finals while the 2 losing teams book the Plate final berths. Two second placed teams will play in the Bowl final with the two third placed teams locking horns in the Plate final. The 9th placed team will not progress any further on day 2.
In addition to the men’s tournament, the women’s segment will see participation from the Army, Navy, and Air Force teams, highlighting the continued growth of women’s rugby sevens in the country. Plus 8 Provincial teams under franchiser names too will kick off this year’s event.
The second leg of the tournament will take place a week later on 28 and 29 March at the Race Course ground followed by the selection matches before the players have been put into a contract till the Asian Games in Japan. There will be two legs of the Asia Rugby Sevens series taking place in China-and Sri Lanka later this year. The outfit will be under the watchful eyes of French Head Coach Thierry Janeczek who arrived in the Island yesterday.
