Inaugural ‘Battle of the Crowns’ Carey vs Christ King kicks off today

A historic chapter in school cricket unfolds today as Carey College and Christ King College, Tudella, Ja-Ela face off in their inaugural ‘Big Match’, marking the beginning of a spirited rivalry between two proud institutions.

Carey College, with its deep-rooted cricketing tradition — producing stars like Jeryl Woutersz, Charith Rajapaksha, and Shabeer Hussain — brings rich experience, records, and a strong legacy to the contest. Over decades, Carey has contributed significantly to Sri Lanka’s cricketing landscape, setting the bar for excellence.

On the other side, Christ King College, an emerging powerhouse, has built impressive momentum through recent achievements, including their Under-17 Division II Championship in 2022 and Shan Nonis’ record-breaking triple-century in the Under-19 season. They represent a new generation, hungry to create their own legends.

The inaugural Battle of the Crowns Big Match will be played over two days on 2 and 3 May for the Revs. Chartter–William Challenge Trophy at the P. Sara Oval, a fitting venue for the birth of a great tradition.

Adding further excitement, the two schools will also contest a limited-overs match for the Revs. Nihal–Heshan Friendly Trophy on 10 May at the De Soyza Cricket Stadium, Moratuwa, promising fast-paced action and showcasing young talents in the white-ball format. Both matches will celebrate not just competition, but also fellowship, school spirit, and the passing of the torch from tradition to the future. As Carey’s experience meets Christ King’s energy, fans can expect passionate cricket, moments of brilliance, and the first memories of a rivalry destined to grow for generations.
