Defending champions Sri Lanka lost both their first round Pool D matches to host Hong Kong and Bangladesh and were relegated to play in the Bowl at the end of the first day of the Hong Kong Cricket Sixes tournament played in Mong Kok yesterday.

Sri Lanka were beaten rather convincingly by Hong Kong in their first match going down by four wickets. Their batsmen were tied down by some clever bowling by Ehsan Khan (1/13) and Nasrulla Rana (2/4) who denied them boundaries. Hong Kong knocked off their target of 80 in a matter of 3.4 overs despite losing two wickets in the opening over to Dhananjaya Lakshan. Aizaz Khan (44* off 10 balls, 3 fours, 5 sixes) and skipper Yasim Murtaza (26* off 8 balls, 1 four 3 sixes) carried Hong Kong to victory with an exceptional display of power hitting adding 69 off 17 balls.

In their second match against Bangladesh, Sri Lanka were unlucky to lose by 14 runs failing to chase down a target of 76 and lost their chance of progressing in the Cup competition. No batsmen made any noteworthy contribution, the batting falling to the off-breaks of Mosaddek Hossain who ended up with figures of 3/20.

Hong Kong and Bangladesh went through to the next round of the Cup competition when their match was abandoned without a ball bowled due to rain and they picked up a point each. Both teams finished on 3 points.
