Wanindu Hasaranga

Sri Lanka’s champion spinner in T20I cricket Wanindu Hasaranga’s further participation in the ongoing T20 World Cup will depend on the MRI scan report which he underwent yesterday for a troublesome hamstring injury.
The injury flared up during Sri Lanka’s opening match of the World Cup against Ireland at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium on Sunday, and a struggling Hasaranga somehow managed to get through his quota of four overs, picking up 3 wickets for 24 to bowl Sri Lanka to a 20-run win.
The MRI scan which he underwent yesterday will determine the extent of Hasaranga’s injury. The report, which was expected late yesterday, will be examined by the medical experts here and it will also be sent to a specialist in the UK before a final decision is made.
Three years ago, Hasaranga underwent a successful surgery for a hamstring tear in his left leg, an injury that kept him out of the 2023 Cricket World Cup.
Hasaranga, who is playing in his fourth T20 World Cup, became Sri Lanka’s highest wicket-taker in World Cups when he took his tally of wickets past fast bowler Lasith Malinga (38 wickets from 31 matches) during the match against Ireland. Hasaranga has 40 wickets from 20 matches and is only 11 wickets short of overhauling Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan, who holds the record with 50 wickets from 43 matches.
Hasaranga has a great chance of going past Shakib’s record during the ongoing T20 World Cup, provided he is fit to play in Sri Lanka’s remaining matches. – [ST]
