HNB crowned champions at TFAB Cricket Sixes Tournament

The banking sector came alive with electrifying energy, sporting spirit, and fierce competition at the Trade Finance Association of Bankers (TFAB) Cricket Sixes Tournament, held on 24 May at the Thurstan College Grounds in Colombo.

The TFAB Cricket Sixes Tournament brought together professionals from across Sri Lanka’s banking industry in an unforgettable day of sport and fellowship. With over 18 teams participating, the tournament featured knockout rounds and highly competitive finals. The format allowed for rapid play, with each match being a six-a-side encounter, offering thrilling entertainment and quick-paced cricket.

The Hatton National Bank (HNB) B Team defeated Sampath Bank B in the final for the second consecutive year, cementing their place as champions in the Open Men’s category. The runner-up position was claimed by Sampath Bank B, who also fielded a strong side and impressed with their skill and consistency throughout the tournament.

In a proud show of inclusivity and diversity, the tournament also featured a Women’s Six-a-Side Cricket Tournament, drawing great enthusiasm and support from the audience. The women›s matches were fast-paced, action-packed, and full of team spirit. In the end, it was the Bank of Ceylon Women’s Team that emerged victorious, while HNB Women’s Team secured the runner-up position. The women’s segment added an extra layer of excitement to the day and highlighted the growing interest in cricket among female banking professionals.

Additionally for the first time the tournament was added with a new feature with Over 40 Men’s category. HNB clinched another trophy by securing a win over Bank of Ceylon.

Lokunarangoda, playing a key role in supporting this landmark event. Kolitha Wickramasinghe has graced this event as the Chief Guest. TFAB President Shyam De Silva emphasised the importance of building community and promoting sportsmanship among banking professionals through such events in his welcome speech.

“This tournament is not just about cricket; it’s also about bringing the community together in the spirit of healthy competition, teamwork, and fun,” said De Silva. “The overwhelming response from the industry demonstrates a strong desire for more such events that allow us to connect, compete, and celebrate our collective spirit.”

Trophies, medals were awarded to the winners, runners-up, and outstanding individual performers, creating an atmosphere of festivity and recognition. Players, fans, and organizers alike praised the tournament for its smooth operation, strong camaraderie, and unforgettable moments. The TFAB aims to continue promoting physical wellness, stress relief, and inter-bank engagement through sports, arts, and recreational activities.
