Hong Kong handed off Sri Lanka 78/7 in the Asia Rugby Championship Top 4 clash held in Hong Kong yesterday.

At the short breather, Hong Kong led 33/7 in the one-sided affair.

The home side, playing a physical game, ran in 12 tries in a one-sided encounter, highlighting their dominance across all facets of the game. Hong Kong is now almost certain for the Rugby World Cup 2027 berth in Australia, with one more away game against South Korea remaining in two weeks’ time.

Luke-Kyle van der Smit and Matthew Samuel Worley each secured a hat-trick of tries.

Meanwhile, Paul Altier (2), Joshua Mark Hrstich, Callum William Scott, Pierce Ian West, and Harry James Sayer crossed the try line for the home team. Altier converted eight tries while Worley counted one. The solitary Sri Lankan try was scored by winger Pasindu Bandara, who broke through the Hong Kong defence for a good try. Skipper Tarinda Ratwatte added the conversion.

Sri Lanka will now face the UAE in Colombo on 4 July, which will be a must-win game in order to survive in the Asia Rugby Top 4 for 2026. If Sri Lanka ends on number four, then once again they will have to play in the promotion/relegation encounter against the Asia Rugby Division 1 outfit later this year.
