Colombo Malays CC halted SSC’s run of five successive outright wins in the Major Club 3-Day League with a gutsy performance, holding the table leaders to a draw at the SLLDC Cricket Ground, Kirimandala yesterday.
SSC thus had to be content with a win on first innings despite forcing Malay CC to follow-on. Trailing by 237 runs, Malay CC put up stubborn resistance to score 216-8, a much-improved batting performance from their first innings of 120. Leading the Malay CC fight back was Chanaka Devinda with a dogged knock of 80 off 266 balls (9 fours) and Pulasthi Athapaththu, who scored 39 off 155 balls.
Galle CC completed a 52-run win against Army SC at the Moors SC Grounds. Starting the final day at 64-5 chasing a target of 198, Army SC lost their remaining five wickets for 81 runs to be dismissed for 145. Off-spinners Rajeewa Weerasinghe (4/35) and Subhanu Rajapaksa (3/49) and left-arm spinner Chathura Randunu (2/22) accounted for the wickets.
Left-arm spinner Hashan Sandeepa (match bag 7/90) and off-spinner Malitha Hapuarachchi (3/33) spun Sebastianites to a six-wicket win over Navy SC at Bloomfield Grounds. Navy SC, resuming their second innings at 81-2, were dismissed for 205, with only Thevindu Dickwella (65 off 78 balls, 8 fours, 1 six) and Ishan Abeysekara (52 off 90 balls, 8 fours, 1 six) making any impression on the bowling. Needing 116 for a win, Sebastianites slumped to 34-4 and managed to get over the line courtesy an unbroken 88 -run partnership between Manelker de Silva (42* off 46 balls, 6 fours) and Umayanga Suwaris (47* off 47 balls, 3 fours, 3 sixes).
Negombo CC also took full points when they defeated Leo CC by 118 runs at Air Force Grounds, Katunayake. Negombo CC closed their second innings at 216-8, leaving Leo CC with the task of chasing 358 for a win. Leo CC were dismissed for 239, their batting falling to the left-arm spin of Danushka Sandaruwan (5/84). The only resistance came from Ashen Mendis (48) and Akeel Inham (62* off 126 balls, 5 fours). Pasindu Thirimadura (79 off 92 balls, 10 fours) and Keshan Wanniarachchi (54 off 127 balls, 2 fours) shared a stand of 106 in Negombo CC’s second innings.
Kandy Customs SC was forced to settle for first innings points when bad light forced a draw against Ragama CC at Salawa Army Grounds, Kosgama. With a first innings lead of 67, Kandy Customs SC closed their second innings at 205-8, leaving Ragama CC with a target of 273. But only 24 overs were possible and Ragama CC scored 65-3 when the match ended. Pramesh Madubashana top-scored with 62 (off 129 balls, 8 fours) for Kandy Customs SC and off-spinner Koshan Jayawickrama took 5/60 for Ragama CC.
