Kavija Gamage’s century in vain

  • Lose first U19 Youth ODI to West Indies by 12 runs

Kavija Gamage’s stroke-filled century (123 off 104 balls, 14 fours, 3 sixes) proved insufficient to bring Sri Lanka victory against West Indies in the first U19 Youth ODI match played at Coolidge.

Sri Lanka chasing a West Indies total of 256 fell short by 12 runs when they were bowled out for 244. Gamage and Aadham Hilmy (41) added 112 for the sixth wicket to place Sri Lanka in a strong position to chase down the target. But Gamage’s dismissal sparked off a collapse as Sri Lanka lost their remaining five wickets for 19 runs.

Earlier, leg-spinner Vigneshwaran Akash troubled the West Indies batters taking 4/33. West Indies were rescued from 108-5 to their final total by Jonathan van Lange who struck a powerful 83 off 94 balls (6 fours, 1 six).

The second ODI of the seven-match series commences today.

Scores: West Indies (U19) 256 (49.5) (Zachary Carter 39, Matthew Miller 33, Jonathan van Lange 83, Aadian Racha 25, Vigneshwaran Akash 4/33).
