Having opened up a 12-point gap with their second outright win for the season, Group A table leaders Police SC will have a quiet weekend which will allow Colts and Nugegoda SWC, the two teams trailing behind them, the opportunity to bridge the gap when the fourth weekend of matches in the SLC Major Club 3-Day League commences tomorrow.
Nugegoda SWC, who are lying third, have the best opportunity to grab maximum points when they meet bottom of the table Bloomfield at the CCC Grounds. Bloomfield find themselves in unfamiliar surroundings having lost their first two matches, and will need to bring their A game into play and start winning if they have any hope of defending their title. Their first priority will be to get into the Super Eight, where only the top four teams in each group will qualify.
Colts, on the other hand, have a tough task as they face a strong CCC unit at the P. Sara Oval.
CCC did not have a game last weekend, and with their powerful batting line-up that has topped 400 on each of the two occasions they have come out and won, Colts will have a handful trying to stop them from winning. Versatile spinner Akila Dananjaya, the season’s joint leading wicket-taker with 19 wickets, will be the key to Colts’ success.
Last year’s losing finalist NCC, lying second from the bottom of Group B, will be keen to make progress up the ladder when they meet Kurunegala YCC at the Rangiri Dambulla Stadium.
Last weekend, they lost a close game to Moors SC in the first innings, which has somewhat upset their momentum. Kurunegala YCC have been dependent for their success on left-arm spinner Chamika Edirisinghe, who is joint leading wicket-taker with 19 wickets.
Second-placed Moors SC, buoyed by their success against NCC, will be looking to carry that impetus into their game against Ace Capital CC at the Colts Grounds and move to the top.
In the meantime, Group B table leaders BRC will also be eyeing full points to consolidate their position at the top with a win against bottom of the table Badureliya SC at the Welagedara Stadium, Kurunegala.
Chilaw Marians CC and Panadura SC, two teams still searching for their first win, will meet at the NCC Grounds.
