The Sports and Youth Affairs Ministry this week announced that the ‘Colombo Marathon,’ organised for the first time by the Ministry, will be held in Colombo in September.

Gamage emphasised that this event will be instrumental in placing Sri Lanka in a prominent position on the global map as a premier international sports tourism destination.

With an expected participation of over 4,000 local and foreign athletes, this marathon will also serve as a testament to Sri Lanka’s commitment towards achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Technical operations will be overseen by a team of 100 qualified officials from Sri Lanka Athletics.

The press briefing was attended by Sports and Youth Affairs Ministry Secretary Aruna Bandara, Department of Sports Development Director General S. Achchudan, Sri Lanka Athletics President Bimal Wijesinghe, and National Technical Officer H.D.J. Rathnasooriya.

The event will feature five race categories:

  • Full Marathon (42.195 km)
  • Half Marathon (21.097 km)
  • 10 km Race
  • 5 km Fun Run
  • Kids’ Mini Run (1-2 km)
