Sri Lanka’s leading professional golfer, Mithun Perera, produced a superb opening round of five-under-par 66 to seize the early lead at the Sri Lanka Open Golf Championship 2026, which commenced at the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC) yesterday.

Perera displayed remarkable composure throughout his round, combining accurate iron play with steady putting to move ahead of a competitive field after the opening day.

His consistency from tee to green enabled him to maintain momentum on a demanding course layout and establish a narrow advantage heading into the second round of the championship.

Experienced campaigner N. Thangaraja and youngster Reshan Algama shared second position after both players returned impressive rounds of three-under-par 68.

The pair remained firmly in contention, trailing the leader by only two strokes in what is expected to become a closely fought tournament over the next three days.

Meanwhile, Haroon Aslam, returning from the USA, also kept himself within striking distance after carding a solid two-under-par 69 to occupy fourth place on the leaderboard.

Several other golfers remained closely bunched behind, ensuring that the competition for top honours remains wide open as the championship progresses.

This year’s Sri Lanka Open Championship has attracted many of the country’s leading professional and amateur golfers.

A total of 74 golfers teed off in the opening round, with the tournament being conducted over four rounds for professionals, while amateurs also compete alongside the country’s elite players.

The battle is expected to intensify at the conclusion of the second round, where only the top 21 golfers will make the cut and advance further in the championship.
