Factions and opponents yesterday raised concerns over the move by Sports Ministry using powers under Sections 32 and 33 of the Sports Law No. 25 of 1973, in appointing a ‘Working Task Force’ to manage Sri Lanka Rugby.

It raises multiple red flags and undermines the principles of good governance, transparency, and judicial respect, they alleged.

Conflict of interest, political interference and disregard for the constitution and a threat to democracy and governance were listed as issues arising from Sports Ministry’s move.

“We urge immediate reconsideration of these appointments and demand that all actions moving forward be conducted in full compliance with the law, respecting court orders, and safeguarding the democratic processes that underpin national sports governance,” they emphasised.
