Eran Wickramaratne in his inaugural address after assuming duties as Chairman of Sri Lanka Cricket’s (SLC) Transformation Committee yesterday said that there were two fundamental pillars which needed to be addressed to restore the pride and performance of the game – improved governance and excellence on the field.
Elaborating on these two pillars Wickramaratne said:
On improved governance: “Our immediate priority is a total overhaul of the governance framework at SLC. The cornerstone of this effort will be the implementation of the proposed new constitution, ensuring it serves as a robust, modern foundation for the sport. We are committed to absolute compliance with the International Cricket Council (ICC) regulations while embedding transparency, anti-corruption, and professionalism into the organisation’s DNA. By fostering a culture of meritocracy and fiscal responsibility, we intend to rebuild the public’s trust in SLC.”
On excellence on the field: “Administrative excellence is the bedrock of sporting success. We will focus on establishing the structures, world-class facilities, and incentive models necessary to empower our national teams. Our goal is to enable our players to consistently deliver world-class performances and elevate Sri Lanka back to the top tier of international rankings.”
“We have been appointed for a short period of time to achieve these two objectives. I am privileged to lead a nine-member committee of individuals with impeccable integrity and expertise. This team comprising Sidath Wettimuny, Roshan Mahanama, Kumar Sangakkara, Prakash Schaffter, Thushira Radella, Avanthi Colombage, Upul Kumarapperuma, and Dinal Philips brings together a rare synthesis of cricketing excellence, corporate management, and legal acumen.”
He stated that he accepted the position as Chairman of the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Transformation Committee following an invitation extended by the President and the Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage.
“I must emphasise that this appointment has nothing to do with politics. Yes, I was a former Minister. We have not come here for any political reasons. Cricket is a sport that can bind the entire nation together. It is a sport watched by the majority of people in Sri Lanka who derive a lot of satisfaction from it,” said Wickramaratne.
“Initially we have to listen and see what has been done already, then speak to the management. We must also take into account suggestions that come from outside before taking a final decision of what needs to be done.”
“I have been passionate about the sport, both during and after my days as a cricketer at school and club levels. To have the opportunity to lead a turnaround in our nation’s cricketing fortunes is a profound honour, and one I do not take lightly.”
