The Japan National Cricket Team visited Sri Lanka for a pivotal practice tour as part of their preparation for qualification in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup from the Asia-Pacific region.

A welcome reception to mark this historic tour was hosted by Japanese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Akio Isomata, at his residence on 1 August. The event witnessed a distinguished gathering of cricket personalities, including Sri Lanka Cricket President Shammi Silva, Japan Cricket Association CEO Alex Miyaji, Sri Lanka Cricket CEO Ashley De Silva, and Japan Cricket Association Goodwill Ambassador Priyantha Kariyapperuma.

Ambassador remarked that the cricket exchange is adding a new layer to and opening a new chapter in the ever-developing bilateral relations between Japan and Sri Lanka, and celebrated the beginning of cricket diplomacy.

Adding prestige to the event were Sri Lankan cricket legends such as Sri Lanka National Team Head Coach Sanath Jayasuriya, Chaminda Vass, Angelo Mathews, as well as active stars Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Charith Asalanka.

To support Japan’s ambitious campaign, Sri Lanka Cricket has arranged a series of seven T20 practice matches against four Under-19 squads from Sri Lanka. This initiative promises to strengthen cricket-ties while nurturing young talent, mutual respect, and deep understanding between the two nations.

This collaborative tour is another vehicle boosting Japan-Sri Lanka relations, both in sports and cultural exchange, offering an inspiring platform for rising athletes and international goodwill.
