Dialog Schools Rugby League 2025 kicks off tomorrow

The much-awaited Dialog Schools Rugby League 2025 is set to kick off tomorrow, 6 June,

featuring a thrilling slate of opening matches. With three matches lined up for the day with one in Colombo and two in Kandy, fans can expect an electrifying start to the country’s premier schools rugby competition.

Defending champions St. Peter’s College will look to retain their crown as they head into the tournament with strong momentum and a formidable lineup. Group A features the Peterites alongside D.S. Senanayake College, Wesley College, Science College, St. Anthony’s College, and Ananda College. All teams will be vying for supremacy, aiming for a spot in the top-tier Cup segment in the second round.

St. Peter’s and Wesley College emerge as the front-runners in Group A, both showing depth in talent and consistency over recent seasons. Their recent performances in friendly fixtures and inter-school tournaments indicate that they are well-prepared to progress to the Cup round. Their clash later in the group stage could very well decide the group winner.

D.S. Senanayake and St. Anthony’s, while not tipped to contend for Cup honours, are expected to make a strong push for the Plate segment. Both sides have shown flashes of brilliance and will be keen to upset higher-ranked teams and prove their mettle on the big stage.

Science College and Ananda College round off Group A and are tipped for a Bowl segment finish. However, both teams possess emerging young talent and could spring surprises if their players rise to the occasion under pressure.

Group B promises fierce competition, headlined by tournament heavyweights Isipathana College who won the recently concluded President trophy knock out tournament. With a legacy of rugby excellence, Isipathana are strongly tipped to qualify for the Cup round. They’ll be joined by five other schools in the group: St. Thomas’ College, Zahira College, Dharmaraja College, Kingswood College, and Mahanama College.

Kingswood and St .Thomas’ are expected to battle it out for the remaining Cup position in the group. Both teams boast strong squads and experienced coaching staff. The key to their progression will lie in consistency and discipline in tight matches.

Zahira College is expected to finish in the Plate segment, while Dharmaraja and Mahanama are likely to fight it out in the Bowl round. However, with the right momentum, any of these teams could challenge higher-seeded schools.

Group C features another marquee rivalry, as Trinity College and Royal College are tipped to make the Cup round. With their rich rugby histories, both sides will be closely watched. The group also includes St. Joseph’s College, Vidyartha College, Thurstan College, and Sumangala College.

Vidyartha and Joes are poised to finish in the Plate segment, while Thurstan and Sumangala are predicted to battle in the Bowl. As always in schools rugby, surprises are common and with talent brimming across the board, the 2025 season promises to be one for the ages.
