Bowl champions Sri Lanka
|
A splendid final over from left-arm spinner Nimesh Vimukthi bowling to two left-hand batsmen saw Sri Lanka beat United Arab Emirates (UAE) by 21 runs to win the Bowl final at the Hong Kong Cricket Sixes tournament in Mong Kok yesterday.
UAE required 28 runs off the final over and at 79-1, and with two well-set batsmen at the crease, were well within range of scoring those runs.
But Vimukthi bowled a brilliant final over, conceding just six runs and also picking up a wicket, to deny UAE the win and give Sri Lanka a consolation victory.
Sri Lanka’s total of 106-2 was set up by Player of the Final, former Thomian cricketer Sachitha Jayatilake, who thumped 52 off 13 balls (3 fours, 6 sixes) before retiring.
Sri Lanka came into the tournament as the defending champions but were knocked out of the Cup, suffering losses in their two Group D matches.
However, in the Bowl competition, they found their feet and began to play like the champion side they were. They defeated Nepal by 3 wickets, UAE by 39 runs, and India by 48 runs to reach the final.
In the match against India, Sri Lanka hit up 138 off six overs without losing a single wicket, with openers Lahiru Samarakoon (52* off 16 balls, 2 fours, 6 sixes) and skipper Lahiru Madushanka (52* off 15 balls, 5 fours, 5 sixes) both scoring fifties before retiring.
Host Hong Kong beat Bangladesh by one wicket to win the Plate final, and Pakistan beat Kuwait by 43 runs to win the Cup final for the sixth time.
