Sri Lanka’s Kumar Danushan had a commendable performance at the 64th National Amateur Golf Championship which took place in Lahore, Pakistan recently ending as runner up among the top end of the 50 plus golfers from South Asia. Despite Pakistan dominating the championship, Danushan’s effort stood out as a proud moment for Sri Lankan golf.
Danushan displayed remarkable consistency throughout the four rounds, carding scores of 75, 73, 72, and 75 to finish with a total of 295 strokes. His composed play under testing conditions kept him in contention until the very end. Ultimately, he fell just one stroke short of the champion, Pakistan’s Saad Habib Malik who posted 294 to secure victory.
The third place was also claimed by the host nation, Shahmeer Maajid finishing on 297. This ensured Pakistan’s strong presence on the podium, while Danushan’s runner-up finish provided Sri Lanka with a noteworthy highlight on foreign soil.
The team event was dominated by the hosts with Sri Lanka failing to match their individual success. Partnering with Chalitha Pushpika, Danushan represented Sri Lanka in the J.R. Jayawardena Trophy where they were placed third behind Pakistan’s Team A and Team B. The Sri Lankan duo tallied 312, falling eight strokes short of the champions.(SJ)
