  • Major Club 3-day League enters final weekend

By Sa’adi Thawfeeq

Colombo Colts CC with an advantageous six-point lead over their nearest rival Moors SC, go into the final weekend of matches in the Super Eights starting today knowing that they are within touching distance of winning the Major Club 3-day League title.

Colts (61.765 points) will not have it easy as they confront fourth placed NCC (48.365) at Pallekele Cricket Stadium. NCC have only an outside chance of landing the title at Maitland Place which they failed to do when they lost on first innings to Bloomfield in a high scoring final last year. NCC needs to get full points against a confident Colts team that has been jellying very well in the past few weeks and brought them closer to the championship. NCC lost a high scoring match against Bloomfield in the first innings last weekend which dented their chances.

Colts have not won the Major league title since 2011-12 when Malinda Warnapura led them to victory. A first innings win against NCC will suffice for Colts to lift the title provided that Moors SC don’t pull off an outright win against CCC which would then change the equation.

It is a similar case with Moors SC (55.635) when they conceded first innings points to Police SC in a closely fought match. That setback has made it tough for Moors SC to win the title unless they can take full points from CCC (46.000) whom they meet at the R Premadasa Stadium, and hope that NCC beats Colts.

Third placed Ace Capital CC (54.660) also have an equal task as NCC in their game scheduled to begin at the NCC grounds against Police SC (46.305). They will need to grab full points if they are to have any chance of winning the title and hope that other results will work in their favour.

The fourth match for the weekend will be a battle between the two wooden-spoonists, Bloomfield (43.395) and BRC (30.130), at the Galle Cricket Stadium. Neither team has any chance of winning the title but pride is at stake especially for Bloomfield who won it last year.

Police SC captain Ashen Bandara is the leading run-getter in the tournament with 782 runs (avg. 55.85) from 9 matches followed by left-handers Pawantha Weerasinghe of Ace Capital CC with 769 runs (avg. 45.23) from 9 matches and Kasun Vidura of Chilaw Marians CC with 762 runs (avg. 63.50) from 9 matches.

The leading bowler is also from Police SC – left-arm spinner Dilum Sudeera with 53 wickets (avg. 25.37) from 9 matches followed by versatile spinner Akila Dananjaya of Colts with 50 wickets (avg. 20.08) from 9 matches and Ace Capital CC’s left-arm spinner Wajuna Sahan with 49 wickets (avg. 25.18) from 9 matches.
