With there being no international commitments for the national team the four clubs that have made it to the semi-finals of the SLC Major Club 50-over tournament will have at their disposal, their full quota of national cricketers.

The two semi-finals will be played under lights at the CCC grounds commencing 2.30 p.m.

The first semi-final today is between Police SC and Colts. Police SC who were unbeaten in the group stage till their final match against Tamil Union which they lost. They have the least number of national players in their side – namely the captain Ashen Bandara, Kusal Perera and Priyamal Perera.

Colts on the other hand are well equipped with six national cricketers in their line-up. Versatile spinner Akila Dananjaya leads them, and they have experienced players in the form of Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal, fast bowler Dilshan Madushanka and all-rounders Dunith Wellalage and Dhananjaya Lakshan.

CCC, the sole survivor of the four semi-finalists of last year’s Sri Lanka Major Club 50-over tournament, will be looking to put things right when they meet Tamil Union in the second semi-final tomorrow.

CCC lost to Ace Capital CC by 4 wickets in the final played last year. Ace Capital CC are one of the three teams that failed to make the semi-finals this year. Moors SC and SSC are the others.

CCC will have a full complement of 7 national stars in their line-up led by national Test captain Dhananjaya de Silva who scored an unbeaten 133 in CCC’s win against Nugegoda SWC in their final group match and Nishan Madushka who holds the record for the highest individual score this year – 174 against Bloomfield. There is also Kamindu Mendis, Vishwa Fernando, Sonal Dinusha (fresh from a successful ‘A’ team tour to Australia), Nuwan Thushara and Lasith Croospulle.

Tamil Union’s line-up includes the captain Minod Bhanuka, Tharindu Rathnayake, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Lahiru Samarakoon, Vijayakanth Viyaskanth and two former Sri Lanka Under-19 captains Sineth Jayawardena and Vihas Thewmika.

With such a complement of national stars available two block-bluster semi-finals could be expected. (ST)
