Chilaw Marians CC send Moors SC bowlers on leather hunt – 420/7

Skipper Sakuna Liyanage and Darshaka Sandeep struck centuries and shared a fifth wicket stand of 189 to help Chilaw Marians CC to a mammoth first day total of 420-7 against Moors SC in their SLC Under23 inter-club two-day match at Surrey Village grounds, Maggona yesterday.

Invited to bat first, Chilaw Marians CC made full use of a good batting surface to run up this impressive total off 90 overs putting the Moors SC bowlers to the sword. Sandeep struck 17 fours and 1 six in his knock of 118 off 134 balls, and Liyanage 12 fours and 3 sixes in scoring 115 off 112 balls. Hiran Jayasundara contributed 56.

Badureliya CC also ran up a total in excess of 300 – 309-6 against Ace Capital CC at Thurstan grounds. Fifties from Janeth Kaushal (70 off 136 balls, 10 fours), and Shanikya Deshapriya (64* off 71 balls, 9 fours) and Rusandu Silva (52* off 79 balls, 3 fours, 1 six) who have put on 119* for the seventh wicket made up Badureliya CC’s total.

Group C pace-setters Negombo CC came up with a strong batting performance dismissing Ragama CC for 143 and replying with 160-1 to take first innings points at Air Force grounds, Katunayake. Skipper Kaveen Fernando hit a superb unbeaten 123 off 126 balls (16 fours, 2 sixes) and Shehan Pramod took 4/29 for Negombo CC.

Tamil Union were not too happily-placed against Bloomfield at Bloomfield grounds ending the day at 137-7 in reply to Bloomfield’s first innings of 217. Off-spinner Tharindu Guruge was the main cause of Tamil Union’s collapse, capturing 5/70 of 15 overs. Spinners Mevan Dissanayake (5/58) and Vihas Thewmika (4/93) excelled for Tamil Union and Asitha Wanninayake with 57 for Bloomfield.

Fifties from Vishwa Supun (52 off 69 balls, 5 fours, 1 six) and Yasiru Rodrigo (61 off 126 balls, 7 fours, 1 six) helped BRC to 284 against Nugegoda SWC at Salawa Army ground, Kosgama. Spinners Nirmala Rathnayake (4/121) and Abishek Anandakumara (3/34) took the wickets for Nugegoda SWC who replied with 8-0.

An eighth wicket stand of 71 off 73 balls by Tharush Damindu (42) and Dominic Fernando (32*) enabled United Southern SC to post 279-8 declared against Army SC at Panagoda. Left-arm spinner Vihanga Iranjana took 4/77 for Army SC who replied with 134-3, 56* of which have come off the bat of captain Ashan Sudarshana.

CCC and Colts were involved in a close tussle to gain first innings points at Colts grounds. Off-spinner Tharana Wimaladharma took 5/55 to dismiss CCC for 214 (Pavan Rathnayake 52). By stumps, Colts had replied with 38-3 to trail by 176.

A similar tussle was on at Army grounds, Dombagoda where Kandy Customs SC after bowling out Galle CC for 200 were 30-1 at the close. Spinners Kaveesha Induwara (4/53) and Nadun Asela (3/34) were the pick of the Kandy Customs SC bowlers. Sandew Induwara top scored for Galle CC with 57. All matches will continue on their second day today.
