Tamil Union led by former Sri Lanka wicket-keeper/batsman Minod Bhanuka collected a prize money of Rs. 2 million as champions of the Major Club T20 tournament and also dominated the individual awards.
In the final played under lights at the R Premadasa Cricket Stadium on Wednesday, Tamil Union beat SSC by seven wickets to clinch their first Major Club T20 title.
What was most inspiring is that Tamil Union went through the entire tournament unbeaten in the nine matches they played – 6 in the group stage and three in the knockout.
They dominated the individual awards with Sineth Jayawardena picking up the Player of the Final award of Rs. 500,000 for his brilliant knock of 82 off 32 balls, Vijayakanth Viyaskanth the Best Bowler’s award of Rs. 750,000 for his 17 wickets (avg. 13.05) making him the leading wicket-taker in the tournament and Navod Paranavithana the Most Valuable Player award of
Rs. 1 million.
The only individual award that evaded Tamil Union was for the Best Batsman (Rs. 750,000) that was won by Sohan de Livera of Moors SC. SSC as runner-up picked up prize money of Rs. 1.5 million.
The awards were presented by Prasanna Fernando, chairman of Domestic Cricket Committee and Chinthaka Edirimanne, head of National Cricket Operations, SLC. (ST)
