CR & FC produced another determined performance to book their place in the final of the Clifford Cup Knockout 2026 rugby tournament after edging past a gallant Air Force outfit by 29/22  in a gripping semi-final played under lights at Longdon Place last night.

At the short breather, the Reds held a solid 22–7 lead, having gradually found their rhythm after a scrappy opening period. The first 15 minutes saw both sides struggling to settle, but once the home team gained control of possession and territory they began to apply steady pressure.

CR capitalised on their opportunities well during this phase, building momentum with confident attacking play and sharp finishing. Air Force, however, never backed down and responded with strong defensive work and counter-attacking rugby whenever the chance arose. In the initial half Reds touched down three tries while the visitors replied through a solitary try.

A key turning point came when Air Force lost their regular place kicker Gayantha Iddamalgoda through injury. His absence was felt in the closing stages, as replacement kicker Kaveesha Kaluarachchi missed two penalties and a conversion which could have narrowed the gap further. Further to kicking issues, Air Force line outs were far below standards.

Despite the setback, Air Force returned strongly in the second half and played some of their best rugby of the match. Their forwards and backs combined effectively to score two well-worked tries, shifting the momentum and putting the hosts under pressure.

CR were also forced to defend resolutely when Omalka Gunaratne was shown a yellow card. During this period Air Force enjoyed territorial advantage and pushed hard, but the Reds defence held firm when it mattered most.

The home side’s tries came through Chatura Seneviratne, Pasindu Bandara, Omalka Gunaratne and skipper Lasindu Karunathilake, all of whom made important contributions in attack. Their ability to convert pressure into points proved vital in such a close contest.

Thenuka Nanayakkara once again demonstrated his reliability with the boot, converting three tries and adding a penalty to continue his excellent goal-kicking form this season, which has been a major asset for the Reds.

Air Force replied with tries from Nirmal Wickremasinghe, Shamika Kaushan and Pathum Pieris, showing determination and fighting spirit throughout the encounter. Kaluarachchi added two conversions and a penalty as the visitors kept the scoreboard ticking and remained competitive until the end.

In the end CR held their nerve to seal the victory and secure their second major final this season. They will now look forward to hosting the Clifford Cup final on 7 March where they aim to cap a remarkable campaign, while Air Force can take pride in a spirited performance that pushed the league champions all the way as they end the season on a high note securing the Plate in the league and ending as losing semi-finalists.

The match was officiated by Kenyan referee Lorence Kiunga.
