CH centre Turu Serupepilli on a powerful run
CH & FC produced one of the most dramatic performances of the Inter-Club Rugby League 2025/2026 season, stunning unbeaten CR & FC with a thrilling 34/32 last gasp victory at Longdon Place.
In a contest packed with momentum swings and nerve-shredding moments, the visitors held their composure when it mattered most to register a morale-boosting win that sent ripples through the league. Winners collected their points through three tries, two conversions, four penalties, and one drop goal, while the Red Shirts scored their 32 points through five tries, two conversions and one penalty.
At the short breather, CH led 22/17.
The foundation of CH’s success was laid through disciplined game management and outstanding goal-kicking by their fullback, Janith Chandimal, whose boot accounted for 19 invaluable points.
CH capitalised on early dominance through tries by Christian de Lille, Maliksha Perera, and Turu Serupepilli, blending forward power with sharp backline execution to keep CR under pressure.
CR responded with characteristic intensity, scoring five tries and repeatedly threatening to wrest control. Omalka Gunaratne was a constant force, touching down twice, while winger Pasindu Bandara looked dangerous, finishing clinically out wide to score twice. The Red Shirts surged ahead late in the game and briefly held a 32/31 advantage, appearing poised to escape with victory. Burly Naveen Marasinghe scored the other try for the Reds. Thenuka Nanayakkara converted two of them.
However, CH refused to wilt. Their defensive resolve and composure under pressure earned a crucial penalty opportunity in the dying minutes. Chandimal calmly slotted the decisive kick, reclaiming the lead at 34/32 before CH’s defence stood firm to close out the match. The final penalty was so close where the referee referred to TMO Nizam Jamaldeen, who gave the green light for the kick.
Referee Ishanka Abeykoon officiated the encounter. (SJ)
