Bloomfield and BRC involved in high-scoring thriller

Bloomfield and BRC were involved in a run glut at the Bloomfield grounds where 615 runs were scored with both sides topping the 300-run mark in a Major Club 50-over game yesterday, but strangely, not one batsman crossed the century mark.

Bloomfield, invited to bat first, thumped 313-5 with contributions of 90* off 86 balls (4 fours, 6 sixes) from the captain Nipun Karunanayake. He received good support from Janith Liyanage (51 off 57 balls, 4 fours, 1 six), Ravindu Fernando (58 off 40 balls, 6 fours, 2 sixes) and Lahiru Madushanka whose 37* off 10 balls comprised 5 sixes. Though losing their first four wickets for 93, BRC put up a good fight to reply with 302-8 to lose by 11 runs. Diniru Abeywickramasingha, the former Matara St. Servatius left-hander and Sri Lanka U19 cricketer missed out on a maiden century by two runs (98 off 90 balls, 9 fours, 3 sixes) and Chamika Heenatigala contributed 53 off 64 (4 fours).

Police SC continued their unbeaten run with a six-wicket win against Badureliya SC at Maggona. Badureliya SC invited to bat first were shot out for 89 in 22.1 overs and Police SC knocked the runs off in 14 overs scoring 90-4 with Chaturanga Jayathilake contributing a rapid 42 off 27 balls (6 fours, 1 six). It was Police SC’s fourth win in as many games and they retained top position in Group A with a 4-point margin over second placed Tamil Union who lost an exciting match by 5 runs to Chilaw Marians CC at the NCC grounds.

In reply to Chilaw Marians CC’s score of 266-8, Tamil Union try as they might, managed only 261, their last four wickets falling for 32 runs to the off-spin of Captain Thanuka Dabare (4/47) and seamer Nimsara Atharagalla (3/59). Sineth Jayawardena was their top scorer with 45. Dabare also had a hand in Chilaw Marians CC’s total scoring a run-a-ball 62 (6 fours, 2 sixes) along with Kasun Vidura who hit an exciting 74 off 75 balls (4 fours, 3 sixes).

Colts and Moors SC kept pace with Bloomfield – all three teams sitting on 6 points each, with wins against Nugegoda SWC and Kurunegala YCC respectively. On their home turf Colts scored 275-9 with Sangeeth Cooray continuing his fine form with 81 off 105 balls (6 fours, 2 sixes) and Kavishka Anjula (55 off 39 balls, 4 fours, 3 sixes). Nugegoda SWC were dismissed for 191 with only Kevin Perera making any noteworthy contribution scoring 70 off 93 balls (10 fours). A feature of the match was that each side used 8 bowlers.

Ramesh Mendis played a captain’s knock of 73* off 107 balls (5 fours, 1 six) to steer Moors SC to a 4-wicket win at the Welagedara Stadium in Kurunegala. Chasing Kurunegala YCC’s score of 196-7 (Rashmika Madushanka 75* off 108 balls, 4 fours, 2 sixes), Moors SC lost half their side for 52 before the skipper came to their rescue partnering Shehan Fernando (48 off 60, 5 fours) in a stand of 83.
