Amazon Founder Jeff Bezos
A consortium including Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is nearing a deal to acquire about a one-third stake in Premier League club Liverpool, in a transaction reportedly valuing the club at around £ 4.4 billion ($ 5.9 billion).
Multiple media reports yesterday said the investor group also includes Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin.
Sky News reported that the consortium is being led by Amit Bhatia, son-in-law of steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal and a former shareholder in English club Queens Park Rangers. Liverpool owner Fenway Sports Group (FSG) could announce the transaction as early as this week, according to the report.
At the reported £ 4.4 billion valuation, the investment would rank among the largest football club valuations and underscore the increase in Liverpool’s value since FSG acquired the club in 2010.
FSG has explored outside investment in recent years while seeking to retain control of Liverpool. Neither the club nor FSG immediately commented on the latest reports.
Bezos, 62, has an estimated fortune of more than $ 280 billion, according to Forbes, while Saverin’s wealth is estimated at around $ 33 billion.
Bezos has previously been linked with potential bids for the National Football League’s Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders, but did not pursue either transaction.
Liverpool, Premier League champions in 2025, are entering a period of transition following the departures of manager Arne Slot and forward Mohamed Salah.
Michael Edwards, who played a central role in assembling the squad that ended Liverpool’s 30-year wait for an English league title in 2020, also left his position as FSG’s Chief Executive Officer of Football in July.
