Benedictines revel at Ritzbury Relay Carnival

Athletes of St. Benedict’s College came up with a sterling performance at the glamour event of the Schools Athletics Calendar, the Ritzbury Schools Athletics Relay Championship held at the Diyagama Stadium from 9 to 11 April. They performed brilliantly in all age groups, emerging Champions in Under-12, Under-14 and Under-20 segments, Runners Up in Under-18 and 2nd Runners up in Under-16.

Benedictines took an early lead winning the very first event of the meet, the long distance medley and maintained their lead right throughout, eventually winning the Championship with a hefty margin of 59 points. Maris Stella College, Negombo came in second and St. Joseph Vaz College were placed third. This margin of victory clearly showed the dominance of Benedictines in Relays, which has always been their forte. It was evident that the fitness and endurance levels of Benedictines were good, as they performed equally well in sprints and long distance events. The SBC Under-20 squad made a clean sweep winning all 6 events in that age category. The depth of their team was seen in their performances also in the younger age categories Under-12 and Under-14, where they emerged group Champions. The success of the Benedictines is undoubtedly due to the exemplary leadership and extraordinary coaching and planning skills of the MIC/Head Coach Nuwan Abeywickrema, who handles both sprints and long distance running. He was ably supported by an exceptional Coaching and Support Staff. Special mention should be made of the hardworking and highly knowledgeable Physio Isivara Pahansith, who kept the fitness levels of the athletes at an optimum level in the lead up to the meet and throughout 3 days of tough competition. All Benedictines, young and old, in Sri Lanka and Overseas savour this great victory, which is even more significant, as it comes as the first major sporting success of St. Benedict’s College as it celebrates the 160th Anniversary of its existence.

The Benedictines trained with a purpose to achieve this victory. They surely are hoping to keep the momentum going, as many important meets like the Junior and Senior Sir John Tarbat Championships and the All Island Schools Athletics Championship are scheduled to take place in the next 6 to 7 months.
