Bangladesh has just lost another Test series to Sri Lanka – their 12th out of the 13 played between the two countries since 2002.
The only series they came close to beating Sri Lanka was in 2017 when they drew the two-Test series one-all. The solitary win came in their 100th Test match played at the P Sara Oval by 4 wickets. Otherwise, Bangladesh has lost 21 of the 28 Tests played against Sri Lanka and drawn 6.
If at all Bangladesh has been competitive with Sri Lanka it has been in the white ball format where they have at times held the edge and won. They have won more matches against Sri Lanka in the ODI format than any of the other two – 12 as against 6 in the T20I format.
The three-match ODI series starting at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium tomorrow highlights the fact that Sri Lanka has lost the last two bilateral ODI series played between the two countries with Bangladesh winning by 2-1 margins in 2024 and 2021 – both series taking place in Bangladesh. They have an object to pursue and put the record straight.
The last occasion Bangladesh played in Sri Lanka was five years ago when they were swiped 3-0.
The contests between these two countries have been intense and competitive, none-as-dramatic as the one that took place at Delhi during the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup.
Apart from Angelo Mathews being dismissed timed out – the first instance in international cricket, Sri Lanka’s loss to Bangladesh by 3 wickets simply shut the door on their chance to qualify for a place in the ICC Champions Trophy.
In 2018 it was Sri Lanka’s loss to Bangladesh in their opening fixture of the Asia Cup in Dubai that dented their chances of making any further progress in the tournament. The Bangladesh loss was followed by another at the hands of Afghanistan which placed Sri Lanka at the bottom of their group.
Currently, Bangladesh are going through one of their worst ICC team rankings. They are ranked 10th in both white ball formats ODI and T20I and 9th in Tests. They will commence their ODI series against Sri Lanka on the back of defeats in their last two series against Afghanistan 2-1 and West Indies 3-0.
Meanwhile, following a series of wins at home Sri Lanka have improved their ODI rankings tremendously to lie 4th, while in the other two formats they have shown improvements as well moving to 6th in Tests and 7th in T20Is.
