Skipper Pat Cummins will miss a second consecutive match after he was left out of Australia’s squad for the second Test against England.

Cummins missed the opening Test of the series in Perth with a back injury as the Aussies clinched an eight-wicket victory inside two days, but the captain is yet to be cleared for a return for the second match at the Gabba that commences on 4 December.

The Australia captain will travel to Brisbane to continue his preparations, but selectors have decided against rushing him back for the day-night contest.

Fellow seamer Josh Hazlewood is also still out injured and misses out on the squad again as he continues his recovery from a hamstring complaint.

It means back-up quick Brendan Doggett is likely to get another chance at the Gabba after he impressed on debut in Perth, with left-armer Mitchell Starc, Scott Boland and Michael Neser the other pacers in the squad.

Experienced opener Usman Khawaja retains his place in the squad despite a lean outing in the series opener, but the left-hander will need to prove his fitness after he suffered from back spasms during the Perth Test.

All-rounder Beau Webster and back-up batter Josh Inglis are the other options in the squad should Khawaja not be passed fit.

Australia squad for second Test: Steve Smith (c), Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Brendan Doggett, Cameron Green, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Michael Neser, Mitchell Starc, Jake Weatherald, Beau Webster.
