Navy SC put up staunch resistance from their lower order to deny Army SC full points in their Tier B 3-day tournament match concluded at Welisara yesterday.
Navy SC who conceded a first innings lead of 77 did well to dismiss Army SC for 170 in their second innings with right-arm seamer Poorna Charuka once again amongst the wickets taking 4/25 for match figures of 9/72. Left with a target of 248 to chase, Navy SC found themselves in deep trouble at 87-6 but Charuka came to their rescue with an undefeated 28 (1 four) defying the Army SC bowling for 122 balls. With Ishan Abeysekera (44 off 61 balls, 7 fours), Charuka added a valuable 61 runs for the seventh wicket. Left-arm spinner Malka Madushanka caused the early flutter in the Navy SC innings with 4/28 which gave him eight in the match. Army SC had to be content with first innings points.
Ragama CC also had to settle for first innings points after Negombo CC came up with a strong batting display in their second innings to post 303-4 at the BRC grounds. Ragama CC gained a first innings lead of 82 scoring 270 in reply to Negombo CC’s 188 in the first innings. Ranmith Jayasena scored an undefeated 121 (200 balls, 10 fours, 6 sixes) for Ragama CC and Negombo CC’s right-arm seamer Hansaja Hiruna had figures of 5/97. Ragama CC’s chances of converting the lead into a winning one was blunted by the Negombo CC top order batsmen with openers Kaveen Fernando (63 off 97 balls, 8 fours) and Pasindu Thirimadura (87 off 146 balls, 6 fours, 1 six) laying the platform with a stand of 107. Contributions of 41 and 49 from Amitha Perera and Captain Angelo Jayasinghe respectively, and an unbeaten 57 (off 70 balls, 6 fours, 1 six) from Umesh Lakshan followed the opening partnership. – [ST]
