Akesh Sampath of Antonians outfit in an attacking move against Thurstan
St. Anthony’s College produced a dominant display to overpower Thurstan College 40/7 in their Dialog Schools Under-19 Rugby League Bowl segment clash at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday.
At the short breather, winners led 21/7.
The Antonians were in commanding form from the kick-off onwards, combining their forwards and three-quarters to deliver a well-rounded performance.
Winners scored one try each through Dinuka Jayasundera, Rajindu Georgory, Omitha Dissanayake, Randeer Perera, Kalpa Lakmina and Awan Ekanayake.
Kalpa Lakmina was on target with five of the conversions, while Thurstan’s solitary try was scored by Sithija Jayathilake, who scored his 13th try this season. Isitha Apoorva added the extra 2 points.
The Antonians’ dominance in both territory and possession meant Thurstan were starved of opportunities in the second half. The Kandy lads never looked in danger of relinquishing their grip on the game.
After an ordinary start in round 1, Antonians ended as Bowl champions but definitely deserve a higher segment trophy. Saliya Kumara made the ordinary side look a different outfit, but their late start in hitting form paid the cost for the Katugastota lads to settle for the Bowl segment in the end.
Referee was Tharindu Perera. (SJ)
