Ananda College on Saturday successfully retained the William Gopallawa Shield with a determined 38/26 victory over Vidyartha College in a thrilling schools rugby encounter played in wet and muddy conditions at Nittawela Rugby Stadium.
Leading 20/12 at halftime, the Anandians produced a disciplined display to record a deserved victory despite difficult playing conditions and being reduced to 13 men at one stage after two players were sent off for foul play.
With persistent rain making handling difficult, the contest became a battle between the forwards. Ananda’s pack dominated the breakdowns and controlled possession, allowing their backs to capitalise whenever opportunities arose. Vidyartha fought bravely and enjoyed spells of territorial advantage but struggled to convert sustained pressure into points.
Ananda skipper Deneth Chamuditha inspired his side with an outstanding all-round performance, controlling the tempo of the game with intelligent decision-making. Although he missed the try conversion attempts, his leadership proved crucial in guiding his team to victory.
The winners crossed for seven tries and a penalty, while the Kandy lads replied with four tries and three conversions.
Referee Ishanka Abeykoon controlled the game.
