Amrith de Soysa becomes youngest captain in Royal Colombo Golf Club’s history

Amrith de Soysa has been officially inaugurated as the Captain of the Royal Colombo Golf Club during the institution’s 145th Annual General Meeting convened on 27 March. 

At the age of 37, Amrith’s appointment marks a significant milestone as he becomes the youngest captain to lead the club since its inception. His ascension to this prestigious position follows a distinguished trajectory within the club, having diligently served as a general committee member and office bearer over a five-year period.

Remarkably, Amrith also holds the distinction of being the first Captain in the club’s history to boast a handicap of 0 or better, with an impressive handicap of +2. His prowess on the golf course is underscored by a sterling junior career, during which he achieved a world ranking of 56 in the Under 19 world junior rankings. Notably, he clinched national junior championships in India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, alongside commendable finishes in prestigious international tournaments such as the Junior British Open and the Junior World Championships. The accolades continue to accumulate for Amrith, who boasts an enviable track record within the Royal Colombo Golf Club. He earned the distinction of being the youngest winner of the esteemed Club Championship, triumphing in the open event at a tender age of 14 years. 

His impressive victory over Rusi Captain in the final, with a score of 3/2, showcased his exceptional talent and determination. Now with five club championships to his name, Amrith ranks among the top performers in the club’s history, trailing only the legendary figures of Pin Fernando and Rusi Captain.

Assisting Amrith in his stewardship of the club will be a dedicated committee comprising individuals from diverse backgrounds. Noteworthy figures such as Avancka Herath, Mahela Jayawardene, Shamal Perera, Rajeev Pandithage, Gehan Siribaddana, Dihan Dedigama, Tharanga Gunasekera, Mihindu Chandrasoma, Rohitha Silva and Dulitha Perera, alongside the club’s first female committee member, Niloo Jayatilaka, will contribute their expertise to various roles within the committee, ensuring the continuous advancement of the Royal Colombo Golf Club.

Beyond his contributions to the golfing community, Amrith also serves as a Director of Trade Promoters Ltd. 

RCFC said Amrithi’s appointment as Captain heralds a new chapter in the rich history of the Royal Colombo Golf Club, with his leadership poised to propel the club to greater heights of success and prominence within the golfing fraternity.
