Pioneering Inland Container Depot Operations
McLarens Containers has been a pioneering force in Sri Lanka’s logistics sector since its establishment in 1979, coinciding with the introduction of containerization to the country. Over the decades, the company has continuously evolved to meet the changing demands of global trade, establishing itself as a trusted name in inland container depot operations.
The company’s strong foundation was built by its Founder Chairman, the late Mr. Hubert A. De Silva, together with his son and current Chairman, Mr. Neil De Silva. Their vision led to the creation of one of Sri Lanka’s earliest inland container depot facilities at No. 776, Negombo Road, Welisara, marking a significant milestone in the country’s logistics infrastructure development. In its early years, McLarens Containers focused on container storage and repair services for container leasing companies and the Ceylon Shipping Corporation, with off-hire surveys initially conducted at the Port.
As the industry evolved, the company expanded its services to meet growing and diverse customer needs. Today, it serves a wide range of clients, including international shipping lines, Non-Vessel Operating Container Carriers (NVOCCs), and specialized equipment operators involved in tank and reefer containers, reflecting its adaptability and customer-centric approach.
Journey from inception to industry leadership
With nearly five decades of operational excellence, McLarens Containers has grown into a large-scale operation with a fully paved central facility, supported by two additional locations within a two-kilometre radius. Together, these facilities can accommodate up to 5,500 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), highlighting the company’s capacity and efficiency.
As an ISO 9001:2015 certified organization, McLarens Containers provides a comprehensive portfolio of integrated logistics services. These include warehousing, cargo lashing, project cargo handling, container freight station operations, transportation, rigging, trading, container conversions, liquid cargo handling and refrigerated container storage and trading. Advanced handling equipment and a computerized yard management system enable real-time inventory tracking, ensuring smooth operations and precise coordination.
A key contributor to the company’s success is its focus on developing human capital. Continuous training and upskilling ensure that employees remain aligned with global best practices. The company’s surveyors are equipped with internationally recognized IICL qualifications, demonstrating its commitment to maintaining high standards in container inspection and repair. Regular audits by international principals further reinforce its quality assurance.
