Demonstrating the private sector’s growing commitment to sustainability, several leading Sri Lankan companies received the Ecolabel Sri Lanka Certification during the CEO Forum on Strengthening Sri Lanka’s Export Competitiveness. The recognition underscores the vital role of green innovation in enhancing the country’s export potential and global competitiveness.
Three companies made history by becoming the first in their respective categories to receive the Ecolabel Sri Lanka Certification:
Siam City Cement (Lanka) Ltd – the first certified company in the Cement category in Sri Lanka.
Melwire Rolling (Pvt) Ltd – recognized as the first in the Steel category to receive the certification.
Harischandra Mills PLC – honoured as the first company in the Plant-based Food Products category to be Ecolabel certified.
Notably, both Siam City Cement (Lanka) Ltd and Melwire Rolling (Pvt) Ltd were certified under the Ecolabels and Sustainable Public Procurement (Eco-Advance) Project, an initiative of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) that supports industries in adopting sustainable practices.
These achievements reflect a growing shift in Sri Lanka’s industrial sector towards cleaner production, improved resource efficiency, and greater environmental responsibility.
In addition to new certifications, Ecolabel Recertification was awarded to companies maintaining high environmental standards:
Nippon Paint Lanka (Pvt) Ltd – recertified in the Construction Chemicals & Products category, reaffirming its long-term commitment to sustainable manufacturing.
Speaking at the forum, industry stakeholders emphasized that sustainability is no longer optional but essential for improving Sri Lanka’s export competitiveness in the global marketplace.
These recognitions serve not only as individual milestones for the companies involved but also as a broader inspiration to the business community. As Sri Lanka charts its path toward sustainable economic growth, initiatives such as Ecolabel Sri Lanka highlight the private sector’s pivotal role in achieving national and global environmental goals.
