With Vesak round the corner, scaffoldings are being erected to mount the paintings depicting Jataka stories encircled with colorful illumination. The buttress which used to be put up using arecanut tree trunks and/or bamboo being tied with ropes has been now replaced with Aluminium metal pipes fixed using metal clamps. This process in no doubt both time and electricity consuming and therby making the installation of the torana costly. The roads are also get damaged as holes are dug to plant the pipes. Roads also have to be temporarily closed and traffic diverted during period of installation and the display period causing inconvenience to road users- both motorists and pedestrians. Why not display the pandals, created digitally, onto wide screens using projectors as lot of money could be saved and most of the above issues highlighted could be avoided. The money saved could be used to put up more dansalas or used for any other meritorious activities during holy vesak period. Mohamed Zahran Colombo 3
