World Bank, in their reference to Compete Report 2012 stresses that a trade supply chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Progress in one area cannot always offset a lack of progress elsewhere. This provides a clear message to the stakeholders in Logistics and Supply Chain Management (L&SCM) industry that this never-ending process should be handled very carefully. To position the L&SCM industry with its due prominence, it would be vital that the workforce comprises professionally qualified individuals.
More research and development should supersede the common traditional operational practices. Although Sri Lanka is ranked in the 67th position with respect to Logistics Quality and Competence in the 2016 Connecting to Compete report published by the World Bank, we are much below than our neighbour India that leads in the 38th place out of 167 countries (based on Logistics Performance Index results across four editions 2010, 2012, 2014, and 2016). Sri Lanka must capitalise on the locational advantages to be well ahead of the activities in Logistics and supply chain management.
