McLarens Maritime Academy celebrates future seafarers at Convocation 2025

McLarens Maritime Academy (MMA), a leading approved Maritime Training Institute in Sri Lanka, held their Convocation of 2025 at BMICH recently. 

It was a well-attended event to recognise the achievements of future seafarers who successfully completed their training programs who are preparing to enter the global maritime industry. 

Merchant Shipping Secretariat Director General Asanga Deshapriya, graced the ceremony as the Chief Guest while Sri Lanka Ports Authority Harbor Master Captain Nirmal Silva and McLarens Group Group Managing Director Shehara De Silva, added colour to the event as the VVIP Guests.

Several dignitaries from the McLarens Group leadership attended the event, namely Group Directors Chandima Hulangamuwa, Captain Athula Hewawitharana, Captain Keith Jayasuriya, Shanil Perera, Admiral Jayantha Perera, Ashan Welagedara, and Ricky Barnett, along with other invitees from sister companies, the placement agencies of maritime sector and the valued parents of the trainees.

The proceedings commenced with the arrival of dignitaries, followed by the national anthem and a ceremonial guard of honor by the students. 

During his address, McLarens Maritime Academy Managing Director Chandima Hulangamuwa, welcomed the distinguished guests, parents, faculty members and students, and commended the cadets for their dedication and discipline throughout their training. He emphasised that all graduating seafarers must uphold the highest standards of integrity, professional excellence, and commitment to safety.

The keynote address delivered by McLarens Maritime Academy Consultant Captain Taraka Telwatta, highlighted the academy’s journey since its inception and its continued commitment to delivering high-quality maritime education and training. He also emphasised the growing global demand for qualified seafarers and the career opportunities available for Sri Lankan youth in the international shipping industry.

Certificates were awarded to students who successfully completed the Navigation Officer Cadet Training Program – Phase I (Batch 3 and Batch 4), the Pre-Sea Training Course Deck Rating – Batch 8, and the Pre-Sea Training Course Engine Rating – Batch 2 and Batch 3. Outstanding students were also recognised during the Best Performance Awards ceremony.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Guest Asanga Deshapriya commended McLarens Maritime Academy for its contribution in developing skilled maritime professionals and strengthening Sri Lanka’s presence in the global maritime industry.
