German institute keen on training of SL seafarers

Peter Dooley Naval Institute in Germany  has expressed its willingness to provide technical training to Sri Lankan seafarers.

This was conveyed by the Institute’s Training Manager Rainer Sterk when he called on the Port, Shipping and Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva in Colombo last week.

Stark said at present, the Peter Doehle Naval Institute provides its technical training to seafarers in many countries including the Philippines, and 15 youths have been trained as merchant marine cadets jointly with the Central Marine Institute of Sri Lanka. 

In this regard, Minister de Silva expressed his gratitude to Stark and requested that a program be prepared for the training of merchant mariners jointly with Mahapola Maritime Academy in the future.

Stark, who responded positively to the request, told the Minister that he would discuss with the top management of the Peter Dooley Institute and prepare an urgent program.

SLPA Acting Chairman Gayan Algewatte, Central Marine Institute Managing Director Kalinga De Silva and Consultant Patali Karunaratne attended the discussion.
