EFL powers up Northern islands with $ 11 m solar hybrid project backed by India

In a groundbreaking milestone for renewable energy in Sri Lanka, Expo Lanka Freight Ltd. (EFL) – Project Division has successfully completed the first critical delivery phase of a transformative $ 11 million Solar Hybrid Energy Project for three remote islands off the Jaffna Peninsula, in collaboration with U Solar India and with generous assistance from the Government of India.

The project, which targets the islands of Delft, Nainativu, and Analativu, is set to revolutionise daily life by replacing costly, high-maintenance diesel generators with a clean hybrid energy solution combining solar, battery, and wind power.

EFL’s mission was no simple task. The logistics required an innovative blend of land-sea-land transport to deliver a total of 105 solar module pallets across the three islands — 43 each to Nainativu and Delft, and 19 to Analativu. With narrow roads, overhanging branches, and entangled power lines on the islands, manoeuvring these massive shipments required surgical precision and relentless determination.

Adding to the challenge, much of the offloading had to be done at night, in the absence of electricity — the very problem the project is designed to solve. Treacherous sea conditions further complicated the final leg to Delft, threatening delays and potential damage to the sensitive equipment.

Yet, against all odds, EFL delivered — literally and figuratively. Through meticulous planning, real-time coordination, and a never-say-die spirit, the EFL team ensured every piece of equipment reached its destination safely, securely, and on time.

The renewable energy systems now being installed will provide reliable electricity to thousands of residents across the three islands — a first in their history. With steady power, the communities of Delft, Nainativu, and Analativu can look forward to better healthcare, education, communication, and overall quality of life.

“This is more than just a delivery,” said the General Manager of Project Cargo Division Mohomed Niyas. “It’s a lifeline for underserved communities, and a testament to what hybrid logistics can achieve in even the most demanding environments.”

The initiative was awarded by the Government of India to U Solar India, underscoring India’s commitment to regional cooperation and sustainability. The project aligns with broader goals of reducing fossil fuel dependence and promoting clean energy in vulnerable regions.

This bold step forward reflects a powerful partnership between nations, technology, and logistics — united by a common vision for a greener future.
