The changing monsoon weather patterns affecting Sri Lanka’s Southern and Western coastal regions are creating new operational challenges for the maritime industry, and has  prompted ILM Shipping to actively promote the Port of Trincomalee as a strategic hub for ship repairs, underwater inspections, diving operations, and marine technical services.

The company stated that increasing unpredictability in sea and weather conditions around Colombo and parts of the Southern coast during the South-West monsoon season has affected vessels requiring safe anchorage, underwater maintenance, emergency repairs, and technical attendance. In response, ILM Shipping plans to strengthen awareness among international ship owners, technical managers, operators and charterers, regarding the operational advantages offered by the Port of Trincomalee.

Located on Sri Lanka’s North-Eastern coast, the Port of Trincomalee is globally recognised as one of the world’s finest natural deep-water harbours. The port provides naturally sheltered waters, safe anchorage conditions, and reduced swell movements during adverse monsoon periods, making it highly suitable for marine technical operations and underwater activities.

ILM Holdings Group CEO Hadley Rodrigo said that the company sees strong potential in developing Trincomalee into a preferred marine support and repair destination within the Indian Ocean region, particularly during periods when weather conditions restrict operational flexibility in Colombo and certain Southern coastal areas. He further reaffirmed ILM Shipping’s commitment to supporting the development of Sri Lanka’s maritime industry by providing reliable agency coordination, marine logistics support, and technical service facilitation tailored to the evolving requirements of the global shipping sector.

CEO Tressel Silva, who recently visited the Port of Trincomalee together with a team of overseas representatives and ship owners’ delegates stated that the visit also aimed to provide an educational and operational briefing to the overseas representatives regarding the port’s growing capabilities in handling marine technical services and underwater repair operations. He  further stressed that the Global shipping operators today are increasingly focused on operational safety, weather reliability, turnaround efficiency, and cost-effective technical solutions. Trincomalee provides a strong platform to support these requirements, especially during monsoon-affected periods in the Southern and Western maritime regions.

ILM Shipping is currently engaging with international ship owners, fleet operators, technical superintendents, marine service providers, diving companies, and overseas principals to promote the long-term potential of Trincomalee as a dependable centre for marine repairs, underwater technical services, and offshore support operations.

In addition to supporting vessel operators, the initiative is expected to contribute positively to Sri Lanka’s wider maritime economy by encouraging greater utilisation of regional ports, generating specialised marine employment opportunities, and strengthening the country’s reputation as a competitive maritime support destination within the Indian Ocean region.
