Amidst the anticipation surrounding the commencement of production and flight testing of the Boeing B777-9 (Passenger), slated to enter service in mid-2025, a key technical awareness session took place at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) recently.

Led by Boeing Airport Operations Engineering Lead Engineer Richard Vaisvila conducted a session on 8 April, where he delved into the intricacies of the B777-9’s design and operational capabilities.

The B777-9, blending the proven performance of the B777-300ER with cutting-edge technologies from the B787 series, boasts a 4th generation composite wing. The aircraft incorporates a folding wingtip (FWT) mechanism, allowing it to balance aerodynamic efficiencies during flight with the necessary airport compatibility on the ground. It was noted that the innovative design not only enhances economic and environmental performance over current B777 models but also minimises costs and impacts on airport operations.

Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Ltd. Chairman Eng. Athula Gaketiya along with senior officials from (AASL) and representatives from SriLankan Airlines, participated at the session with their presence. Their participation underscores the significance of the B777-9’s introduction and its potential impact on the aviation landscape.

With its groundbreaking design and technological advancements, it was highlighted that the B777-9 is poised to redefine air travel standards, promising enhanced performance, efficiency and sustainability for the future.
