A two day workshop on Sustainable Tourism was recently conducted by Srilal Miththapala for the students of the Hospitality, Tourism and Events Management Degree Programme of the Uva- Wellassa University.

In addition to covering Environment and Sustainable Tourism developments in a Sri Lankan context, the second half of the programme focused on practical field work.

The students had to do a three hour trek to the spectacular Namunukula mountain, and then conceptualise a suitable sustainable development project for the area. They presented their ideas in batches, which was evaluated by the course director and other lecturers.

The course proved to be quite interesting and popular with the students, since it gave them a chance to understand the theoretical inputs, and also be able to practically apply them to a project.

Miththapala who is a Senior Tourism Professional, having had more than 20 years experience in tourism is now attached to the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce as Project Director of the EU funded SWITCH Asia Greening Sri Lanka Hotels Project.  He serves as an advisor to the Uwa Wellassa University for their Degree Programme in Tourism.
