The Spices & Allied Products Producers’ & Traders’ Association (SAPPTA) hosted its Annual General Meeting on Friday, 29 July 2011, at the Grand Orient Hotel Colombo.
Minister of Minor Export Crops Promotion Reginald Cooray was the Chief Guest.
Addressing the guests at the event, the newly-elected SAPPTA Chairman Viren Ruberu said that he firmly believed that the association had the capacity to make the change that is needed in the spice industry in this country.
He went on to say that the plantation industry had contributed immeasurably to prosperity and development of the country and that Sri Lanka’s fortunes and prosperity has been closely related to the performance of the plantation industry.
His closing remark was that the spice industry should be strategically driven to the same status quo or even better, by aligning a visionary goal as a country and aggressively working towards achieving it. To do that, a one-stop mechanism should be in place to assist, regulate, monitor, advise, promote, brand and market Sri Lankan spices.
The office bearers elected for the year 2011/12 are:
Viren Ruberu (Chairman) – Kahawatte Plantations PLC.
K. Ramachandran (First Vice Chairman) – Jayes Trading Co. Ltd.
T.A.G. de Mel (Second Vice Chairman) – Balangoda Plantations PLC.
The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce has been providing secretarial services to the association for over 26 years.
