People’s Bank hosts ‘Sisu Udana Kusalatha Panama’ Scholarship Awards

People’s Bank, once again displaying its commitment towards building an academically-solid young generation, recently organised the ‘Sisu Udana Kusalatha Pranama’ Scholarship Awards for the 18th time at People’s Bank Staff Training College Auditorium.

Serving Sri Lankans by providing a host of banking facilities over five decades, People’s Bank launched this programme in 1993 as a part of its corporate social responsibility initiatives.

During the programme, scholarships were granted to 56 students who excelled at the 2009 G.C.E. O/L examination. The group comprised of the students who obtained the highest marks in national and district levels at the exam. Their results were certified by the Department of Examinations. They will be granted this scholarship for two years in order to continue their higher studies.

The Chief Guest at the event, the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka Dharma Dheerasinghe, said: “It is a commendable effort of People’s Bank to organise this programme for the 18th year. All of you who received these scholarships would succeed at the A/L exam and enter university. By the time you complete your studies, society may be very different from today. Therefore, to face future challenges, you should prepare yourself from now on as college students. In that process acquiring knowledge in subjects like IT, English and mathematics will be vital.”

CEO/General Manager of People’s Bank H. S. Dharmasiri said: ‘As a State-owned bank, People’s Bank has a huge responsibility in the development process of the country. On the other hand, we have a clear focus on the wellbeing of the people. People’s Bank has exceptionally served the student population of the country throughout the bank’s history.”

Commissioner of School Examinations K. H. M. Bandara, the Head of the Sinhala Section of the University of Colombo senior lecturer Prof. Sarath Wijesuriya and Head of Marketing and Public Affairs of People’s Bank Deepal Abeysekera also addressed the gathering. The vote of thanks was delivered by Sachitra Shamali Gunawardena of Devi Balika Vidyalaya, who became the first in the island at the examination.

Senior Deputy General Managers of People’s Bank Sabry Ebrahim and Wasantha Kumar along with other invitees awarded the scholarships at the event. The corporate management of People’s Bank, the parents of scholarship recipients and the principals of the respective schools also attended the occasion.  The event was graced with dancing and singing performances of students and renowned artists.
