‘e-BMD’ project expanded to Monaragala

The IT project termed e-BMD has been expanded to Monaragala.

The project digitises records of births, marriages and deaths, and computer printouts are issued for copies of these records.

This project is being carried out as part of increasing Sri Lanka’s IT literary rate to 75% by 2016 and measures are being taken to digitise government records under the e-government programme.  The Government has already digitised several million civil documents, including Birth, Marriage and Death Certificates in three phases at a cost of Rs.167 million.

Phase One of this project was carried out at a cost of Rs.31 million at Divisional Development Secretariat levels in the Districts of Matara, Gampaha, Kandy, Vavuniya, Kurunegala, Anuradhapura, Nuwara Eliya and Puttalam.

The Divisional Development Secretariats covered under Phase One include Akuressa, Gampaha, Attanagalle, Meerigama, Vavuniya, Kurunegala, Kalpity, Anuradhapura, Nuwara Eliya, and Gangawata Korale.

Under phase II of the programme implemented at a cost of Rs.128 million, documents related to tsunami affected areas in the districts of Matara, Galle, Hambantota, Gampaha, Kalutara, Ampara, Trincomalee, Jaffna and Batticaloa were digitised.

The third phase covered digitizing of documents in the Districts of Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Mannar and Vavuniya at a cost of Rs.7 million.
