Colombo, Sri Lanka — The Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT), Sri Lanka’s pioneering private higher education institute, proudly celebrated 35 years of academic excellence and 20 years of its strategic partnership with the University of Westminster (UoW), UK at a prestigious felicitation ceremony held on 14th November at the Galle Face Hotel, Colombo.

Founded in 1989, IIT has played a transformative role in shaping Sri Lanka’s ICT and business education landscape. Over the past three and a half decades, the institute has produced more than 6,000 globally recognised graduates and currently supports a thriving student community of over 8,200, solidifying its position as a leading provider of British higher education in the region.

The event brought together senior representatives from the University of Westminster, including the Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter Bonfield, alongside industry leaders, alumni, faculty members, and distinguished guests. The ceremony recognised individuals and organisations that have significantly contributed to IIT’s enduring legacy and the continued strengthening of its academic partnership with UoW.

Addressing the gathering, IIT’s leadership expressed pride in the institute’s achievements and reaffirmed their commitment to delivering globally relevant, industry-aligned education. Representatives from the University of Westminster commended the longstanding partnership, emphasising the shared dedication to academic innovation, international standards, and enhancing graduate employability.

Looking ahead, IIT announced its vision for future growth, including the expansion of academic pathways, the integration of emerging technologies, and the enhancement of global collaborations. A key highlight of the evening was the unveiling of the model plan for IIT’s new state-of-the-art green campus currently under construction in Ratmalana, underscoring the institute’s commitment to sustainable and future-ready education infrastructure.

The ceremony also marked a significant milestone as IIT and the University of Westminster exchanged an MoU to introduce the new MSc in Applied AI—a programme being launched for the first time in Sri Lanka, further strengthening the academic bond between the two institutions.
