Every day, thousands of ships cross the world’s oceans carrying the cargoes that sustain modern life. The food we eat, the fuel that powers our economies, the raw materials that feed our industries, and the countless products we use every day all depend on one essential factor: seafarers.

The International Maritime Organization’s theme for the Day of the Seafarer 2026 — “Carrying world trade. Carrying the risks.” — is a timely reminder of the enormous responsibility borne by those who work at sea.

Among this global community of maritime professionals, Sri Lankan seafarers have earned a reputation that extends far beyond the shores of our island nation. On vessels operating in every corner of the world, Sri Lankan officers and ratings are respected for their professionalism, technical competence, discipline, and commitment to the highest standards of maritime practice.

This reputation has not emerged by chance. It is the result of rigorous training, strong educational foundations, internationally recognized qualifications, and a culture that values responsibility and professionalism. Throughout the global shipping industry, Sri Lankan seafarers are known as capable team members, reliable leaders, and skilled professionals who perform their duties with dedication and integrity.

Yet the profession demands sacrifices that are often invisible to those ashore.

Seafarers spend months away from their families, missing important moments in the lives of their loved ones. They work in challenging environments where long hours, adverse weather, operational pressures, and the constant responsibility for safety form part of everyday life. Increasing geopolitical tensions and security concerns in certain parts of the world have added further risks to an already demanding profession.

Despite these challenges, seafarers continue to perform their duties with remarkable resilience. They understand that global trade depends upon their expertise and commitment. Every safe voyage, every cargo delivered on time, and every vessel operated efficiently is a testament to their professionalism.

For Sri Lankan seafarers, there is an additional dimension to this responsibility. Wherever they serve, they represent not only their employers and vessels, but also their country. In many cases, the colleagues, managers, and international partners they work alongside may never visit Sri Lanka. Their impression of our nation is shaped by the Sri Lankan professionals they encounter at sea.

In this sense, every Sri Lankan seafarer becomes an ambassador for the country.

Through their conduct, competence, work ethic, and ability to cooperate within multinational crews, they project the very best qualities of Sri Lanka onto the global stage. Their contribution enhances the reputation of the nation and demonstrates the value that Sri Lankan maritime professionals bring to the international shipping industry.

The maritime sector has always been international in nature. Ships bring together people from different countries, cultures, religions, and backgrounds who must work as one team to ensure the safe operation of the vessel. Sri Lankan seafarers have long distinguished themselves within this environment through their adaptability, professionalism, and ability to build trust and respect among colleagues from around the world.

As we mark the Day of the Seafarer, it is important not only to recognize the economic contribution of those who work at sea but also to acknowledge their role in strengthening Sri Lanka’s standing within the global maritime community.
