Women in construction

On the theme “Women in Construction”, with the support of the German Crafts Chamber (HWK of Frankfurt – Rhein Main), the Chamber of Construction Industry of Sri Lanka set out to select female participation in the construction industry and bestow upon them recognition for their pioneering role in a traditionally male-dominated industry.

12 female participants were crowned as ‘Female Construction Stars’ at Waters Edge on 17 July, in an event graced by Construction Industry Development Authority Chairman Prof. Chandana Jayalath as the Chief Guest. He explained the policy of the Government regarding the female gender and its future plans for employment as a contribution to the economic development of the nation.

The event was also attended by leading personalities in the industry who supported and encouraged their nominees.

The opening remarks were made by Emeritus Professor Chithra Weddikkara, who highlighted the potential for employment and careers in this industry.

The President of the Chamber of Industry made a formal address to those invited to the event, referencing their recognition of the female gender in the industry of architects, quantity surveyors, engineers, planners, and environmental scientists.

Awards were presented to 12 eligible candidates in a gala show, and this showcased encouragement for others to join this industry and contribute towards nation-building.
