Tribute to Late Professor Abeysekara

Late Professor Nalin Abeysekara, former Dean of the Management Faculty at the Open University of Sri Lanka, was a shining example of a true mentor and guiding star to all who knew him. With a deep sense of mindfulness and a light heart, he left an indelible mark on the academic world and the hearts of his students.

An alumnus of Ananda College and the University of Sri Jayewardenepura’s Department of Marketing, Professor Abeysekara was a pioneer in the field of marketing in Sri Lanka. His groundbreaking work, “Marketing Sinhalen,” the first marketing book written in Sinhalese based on case studies, revolutionised the way marketing was taught and understood in the country.

Master of mindfulness and kindness 

Despite his immense success and popularity, Professor Abeysekara remained humble and approachable, earning the admiration and respect of both his students and colleagues across universities in the north and south of Sri Lanka. From the University of Jaffna to the University of Ruhuna, his influence was felt far and wide.

But it was not just his academic achievements that set Professor Abeysekara apart; it was his humane qualities that truly defined him. Always happy and never harbouring any regrets, he embodied a sense of contentment and peace that inspired all who crossed paths with him.

Tragically taken from this world before his time, Professor Abeysekara’s legacy lives on through the courage and strength demonstrated by his wife, Ayanthi, and son, Sanuka. In their time of grief, they have shown incredible resilience and grace, encouraging others to do good deeds and collect good merits in his honour.

In the hearts of all who knew him, Professor Nalin Abeysekara will forever be remembered as a beacon of light in the academic world, a mentor, and a friend to all. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come, reminding us of the power of mindfulness, kindness, and the pursuit of knowledge. He was the best living example  of “how to live in the present moment” to me.

Professor Abeysekara’s role as a master of individual motivation, inspiring countless students, professionals, and peers with his genuine words of encouragement, left an indelible mark on all those who crossed paths with him. His ability to uplift and empower others stemmed from a place of authenticity, resonating deeply with those who sought his guidance and wisdom.

Late Professor Nalin Abeysekara, affectionately known as “Asekara”, left an unforgettable mark on those who had the privilege of knowing him. His endearing nickname, a playful nod to his surname and perhaps his admiration for the poet Mahagama Sekara, reflected his charming and witty personality.

One of the most heart-touching aspects of Professor Abeysekara was his subtle communication style, which revealed his depth of character and genuine care for others. A testament to this was his choice of ringtone, which resonated with those who knew him well. The lyrics of the song “Mage Putha Hari Hapana” that he had as his ringtone held a special significance, not just as a melodious tune, but as a profound message of love and hope.

One penny of three pense for me

Late Professor Nalin Abeysekara’s devotion to his son Sanuka and his dream of guiding him to become a shining star in the world was a testament to his loving and nurturing spirit.

This was the ringing tone of his mobile connection. The lyrics, cherished by many as a lullaby learned from their mothers, spoke volumes about Professor Abeysekara’s aspirations and dreams for his loved ones. The verse, translating to “My son is clever, he will go to the capital city of Sri Lanka in the near future to complete his studies and then he will start working as an educated professional. And when he starts earning, he will take care of me,” encapsulated his deep-rooted values of family, education, and filial piety. I am sure hearing this every time on his phone would have been a motivation for young Abeysekara. 

As we remember the late Professor Nalin Abeysekara, let us cherish the memories of his subtle communications, his playful nickname, and the profound impact he had on our lives, forever echoing his wisdom and warmth in our hearts.
