An international sports event at the St. Joseph’s College Stadium required that we enter the premises from the swank Nelum Tower (Gate C) and walk along the picturesque trail at the backend of the Tower, along the Beira Lake. The lake itself looks clean enough and is quite exquisite though the water quality may not be good enough.

But what was so despicable, was the pungent mass of waste that gathers along the boundary gabion and ruins what is otherwise, a most pleasant part of the city and this very popular landmark in Colombo. A glance will tell you that it would not take a Nelum Tower crew more than a few hours to clean this area and in fact prevent this mass of waste gathering at this point. The larger issues of conservation of course will demand attention, something the President himself highlighted recently!
